Avs Give O'Reilly the Fast Track

Surreal has become second nature to Ryan O’Reilly.

From his draft day in June, to his first game as a member of the Colorado Avalanche just a few months later, to the day last month the Avs told the 18-year-old centre he’d be sticking around rather than returning to junior, the amazing life he’s living hasn’t completely sunk in.

Game No. 21 came Tuesday against the Calgary Flames.

He wasn’t sure he’d see Game 10, which meant the first year of his professional career officially took effect and the Avs wouldn’t be returning him to the Erie Otters of the OHL despite his age.

“I couldn’t really believe it. The whole experience — just playing in the games, then getting the nine games, playing the tenth — who would have thought I’d be here?” said the humble 6-foot, 200-lb. middle man from Clinton, Ont.
